Rolling Stone Cover Project, “American Uprising” (Nelson)

June 16, 2020 | New York, NY – Wonderful collaborating with the iconic Rolling Stone magazine for the latest issue on newsstands this month. In tandem with the release of the cover painting, “American Uprising”, is an audio-visual mashup of historical footage from RS staff, juxtaposed with my videography and photography covering behind-the-scenes with Kadir creating the original painting around the clock.

This piece reflects what we are all witnessing around the world with the recent (but long history of) civil unrest regarding the public slayings of BIPOC, and the heightening tensions spilling into the streets as we all face the uncertainties of the looming pandemic. Reflecting a diverse group of activists, this piece pays homage to La Liberté by Eugene Delacroix.
