Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Sponsored Seminar Talk

February 7, 2014 | Los Angeles, CA – If you plan to be in the Los Angeles area in early February, I will be presenting research from my latest book manuscript in progress for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, John E. Sawyer Seminars on Comparative Study of Cultures. It will be held at the University of Southern California, co-sponsored and organized by the USC Center for Japanese Religions & Cultures, California African American Museum, and the USC School of Dramatic Arts.

The theme of the seminars is African American/Asian/Asian American: Crossing Borders and Boundaries.

“…This seminar examines various intersections of ethnicity and race between African- and
Asian-descent populations, both historical and contemporary, and critically and in the
arts. It includes four scholars, several of whom are practicing artists, and a filmmaker
and his film “Harimaya Bridge,” which is the first feature-length film to be made by a
U.S. citizen in Japan. This event is sponsored by the USC Center for Japanese Religions
and Culture in association with the California African American Museum.”

The title of my talk will be, “Identity from the Frontlines: Black and Asian Children Orphaned by Deployed Military Personnel” at 12:30pm. It is part of my larger book project, Who’s Your Daddy: An International Study of Multiracial Children Orphaned by Military Personnel Abroad,  which I have been working on in residence as a Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley since April 2013.
